WHY SHOULD I WEAR MY RETAINERS?
Retainers are appliances that are given after completing your braves or aligners treatment to prevent relapse.
Relapse is the tendency of the teeth to return back to its original position like how it was before correcting
Retainers can be either removable or fixed
REMOVABLE RETAINERS:
They are clear, custom made plastic tray that fits over your teeth.
It should be worn for next 2 years after completing orthodontic treatment.
They should be worn throughout the day except while eating.
FIXED RETAINERS:
It consists of a wire that is attached to back surface of the tooth.
It should be maintained well.
If any breakage of wire or if you notice that wire has detached from the tooth you need to visit your dentist immediately.
WHY IS RETAINER SO IMPORTANT?
When we move the tooth orthodontically, we move them inside the bone.
When tooth is moved, there will be some areas where bone need to resorb and some areas where bone has to form. The new bone formed around the tooth takes atleast 6 months to harden.
If you didn’t wear your retainers, the tooth tends to move back to its position as the bone will be soft.
Other reason is that there are some fibres that connect the tooth to the bone and gums. We call it periodontal ligament fibres and gingival fibres respectively.
During orthodontic treatment these fibres will be stretched and will be in a state of tension. They need some time to relax postoperatively so they they don’t pull back the tooth to its original position when they contract.
So make sure you wear your retainers correctly. Visit your dentist 6 months once for a review after getting retainers.
