What is Chromogenic Bacteria Staining?
It is the discolouration of teeth due to stain forming bacteria. Periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens are reported to be black-pigmented anaerobes in oral cavity, who are responsible for production of black pigment.
Clinical appearance
• Thin black line, firmly attached to the tooth surface
• Front & back of teeth area in between teeth
Which food mostly causes staining ?
Cola, fruit juices, soy sauce, cherries, pomegranates, Iron containing oral solution common to cause tooth staining.
How do you prevent chromogenic stains?
• Tooth brushing twice or three times a day.
• Brushing teeth soon after eating, this eliminates food’s acids or other staining properties.
• Professional scaling and polishing every 6 months.
