EFFECTS OF FLUORIDES ON TEETH
WHAT ARE FLUORIDES?
Fluorides are naturally occurring mineral found in food and water.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
• Remineralizes tooth enamel
• Reverses early tooth decayed
• Slows down demineralization
• Prevents the growth of caries producing bacteria.
HOW DOES IT DO ?
Our teeth is formed of three layers – Enamel, Dentine, pulp. The outermost layer is the enamel. It is the strongest substance in our body. Enamel is made of hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals comprising of calcium and phosphate.
Our oral cavity has plenty of microorganisms. Enamel starts to demineralize when it is attacked by acids secreted from the microorganisms resulting in dental caries.
Now comes the role of FLUORIDES!!!
Fluorides reacts with HA crystals to form Fluorohydroxyapatite crystals. They are made of a dense crystal lattice with decreased solubility rate. Thus, making the teeth more resistant to caries producing acid attacks.
AT WHAT AGE IS FLUORIDE INTAKE MORE IMPORTANT?
Children between the age 6 and 16 years are recommended to have fluoride application as permanent teeth erupts in this age. It can also be done in kids below 6 years with professional guidance.
Adults who have gum diseases, previous history of tooth decay, and those who have dental crowns or bridges and those who are wearing orthodontic brackets can also undergo fluoride application.
