SDF IN PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an antibacterial topical liquid that is transparent and odorless and is used to treat and prevent tooth decay and was cleared for sale by The Food and Drug Administration in the United States in August 2014. It is an alternative to the traditional drill and fill method that many dentists and parents are presently adopting to treat children's tooth decay
Why opt for SDF?
The fluoride ions encourage remineralization by boosting the development of fluorapatite, which fortifies the tooth structure and increases its resistance to acid breakdown, while the silver ions have antibacterial qualities. Additionally, it helps silver phosphate and calcium fluoride to build a protective layer on the surface of the tooth that prevents demineralization and serves as a physical barrier against acid attack. SDF is a useful agent in reducing dental caries because of its all-encompassing approach, especially in primary molars where standard therapies may be difficult.
Procedure
Simple and typically will take less than five minutes.
• Teeth are cleaned and dried using a gauze and stream of air
• Less than a drop of the clear SDF liquid is applied to the affected tooth area.
• All of the dentition is then covered with fluoride varnish that further helps arrest the cavity and prevent other teeth from developing decay
The patient will return for a re-evaluation of the lesion as per the doctor’s recommendation at which point additional treatments may be necessary. The process is completely painless.
